Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin 

 Public Affairs Legal Internship

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPWI) is one of Wisconsin's largest health care providers. PPWI's   mission is to ensure the right of all individuals to manage their sexual and reproductive health through direct service, education, and advocacy.

PPWI's Public Affairs Department works with legislators to protect reproductive health care.  PPWI's Legislative Director monitors pending state and federal legislation and court decisions.  This includes conducting legal analysis on each bill pending in the Wisconsin legislature which could impact  reproductive health care.

The legal intern will work with the Legislative Director on legal research projects concerning reproductive rights issues in Wisconsin and nationally. 

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to reproductive freedom, including the right to choose abortion
  • Superior legal research, analytical and writing skills
  • Interest in reproductive health public policy issues
  • Ability to work independently and quickly

Applicants must be completing the first, second or third year of law school.   A commitment of at least 10 hours a week during the school semester is required.  Summer internships are also available.  

Responsibilities:

The Legal Intern will conduct legal research,  analysis and writing on some of the following topics:  

  • state and federal constitutional issues regarding the right of privacy and reproductive freedom;
  • Federal and state laws concerning reproductive rights issues;
  • pending Wisconsin legislation

The Legal Intern will also assist in preparing legal materials for educational purposes and assisting in legislative hearing preparations.

This list of responsibilities is not exhaustive but rather outlines the type of projects on which the Legal Intern will be working.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin 

 Development Department Internship

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin provides exciting volunteer internship opportunities throughout the year--college credit can be arranged.  This is a great opportunity to gain on-the-job-skills while doing vitally important work to protect and expand reproductive choice.  The Development Department is looking for qualified and motivated interns to work on subscribership management, fundraising, event planning, research activities, and more!

Background Information on PPWI: Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin's mission is to ensure the right of all individuals to manage their sexual and reproductive health through direct service, education, and advocacy.  Development interns are key to the success of raising private support to fund Planned Parenthood programs.  Fundraising allows PPWI to develop new programs and expand our existing programs.  By providing accessible health care services, accurate sex education and promoting legislation that protects and expands reproductive rights, PPWI is helping individuals to make responsible choices.

Internships are non-paid, available year-round, and are approximately 10 hours/week.

Qualifications:

  • Good communication and writing skills
  • Basic computer skills (particularly Excel)
  • Self-motivated and organized
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Reliable

Development interns work closely with the Regional Vice President and the Development & Database Coordinator on:

  • Basic administrative work
  • Donor cultivation through database management
  • Coordination of special event fundraisers
  • Community Relations
  • Annual fundraising campaigns
  • Large direct mail campaigns

NARAL

Election Intern (Madison)

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin is a grassroots political advocacy group devoted to promoting women's reproductive health and rights, and protecting freedom of choice.

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin is looking for a creative, upbeat, resolutely pro-choice student to fill the position of Election Intern. This position will be responsible for training and supervising volunteers for NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin's 2004 election efforts, primarily at phone banks and doorknocks with pro-choice candidates.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Staff 1-2 phonebanks per week and 3 lit drops per month
  • Assist with the recruitment, training, managing and debriefing of volunteers
  • Must be available to work some evening hours
  • Some travel may be required (will be reimbursed at current IRS rate)
  • Assist Constituency Director with building leadership in volunteers and captains
  • Must be available to work 10-15 hours/week

Unpaid, but staff will work with intern to obtain college credit

Qualifications:

This internship runs from September through November during peak volunteer months. A commitment to reproductive rights, strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. Interns must be able to work independently with supervision and assistance. Experience working with volunteers and/or databases is a plus, but not required.

NARAL

Communications Intern (Madison)

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin is looking for a creative, upbeat, resolutely pro-choice student to fill the position of Communications Intern. The communications intern will assist with media work as well as write a wide variety of publications. This position offers the opportunity to gain valuable research, writing, and technological skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain press list
  • Send out press releases and advisories as directed
  • Aid Executive Director with media follow calls
  • Assist Constituency Director with fact sheets and volunteer materials
  • Must be available to work 15 hours/wk

Unpaid, but staff will work with intern to obtain college credit

Preferred Qualifications:

Must be fully pro-choice and committed to ensuring all women have access to the full range of reproductive health care including abortion; excellent research and writing skills; computer and word processing knowledge; the ability to work independently and creatively.

Volunteer Outreach Intern (Madison)

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin is looking for a creative, upbeat, resolutely pro-choice student to fill the position of Volunteer Outreach Intern. This position will be responsible for recruiting and coordinating volunteers for NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin's 2004 election efforts, including phone banks, doorknocks, and other events as needed.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Pull volunteer lists from database
  • Contact volunteers (phone and email) to schedule activities
  • Schedule phone captains
  • Must be available to work 15 hours/wk

Unpaid, but staff will work with intern to obtain college credit
