Gender and Women's Studies Undergraduate CertificateSpring 20101. REGISTRATION AND WAITING LIST PROCEDURES As you may know, GWS certificate students do not receive priority enrollment as GWS majors do. However, GWS certificate students DO receive priority on waiting lists. See below for more information. Only Gender and Women's Studies MAJORS can register for the courses below through The introductory courses, WS 101, 102 and 103 are not blocked to general registration. If you would like to potentially enroll in a GWS course that is full/closed, you will need to get on the course's waiting list. If you need to get on a waiting list, the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies policy is that waiting lists are started on the first day of classes and kept by individual instructors. Certificate candidates and graduating seniors are generally given priority on waiting lists. Certificate candidates have successfully enrolled in Gender and Women's Studies courses from waiting lists in the past, but please remember that certificate candidate status is NOT A GUARANTEE that you will be admitted into any course. Plan to attend the first day of class if you want to get on a waiting list. Courses held for majors through Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 are: WS 310: Gender, Sexuality and Performance (Lecture 1 only) (H) After November 17th, these courses will be opened up for general registration. The hold will be lifted the morning of November 18th, 2009. 2. COURSE OFFERINGS AND CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS: Biology/Health: WS 103 (E, N), 533 (B) ** Remember, only two of the five course requirements can be taken at 3. COMPLETING YOUR GENDER AND WOMEN’S STUDIES CERTIFICATE: At the start of the spring semester I will send an email to all GWS certificate students requesting your response if you will be completing your certificate at the end of the spring semester. Please keep in mind that your response to that email is what will begin the certificate posting process. If I do not hear from you, it is likely that your certificate completion will not be posted to your transcript. Please respond the email ‘5th and final class’ in the spring semester, not before then. 4. ADDITIONAL COURSES APPROVED FOR WOMEN'S STUDIES CREDIT In some circumstances it is possible to count a course taught outside of the DGWS that is focused on gender towards the gender and women's studies major with the advisor's pre-approval. If you see a course that you think may be applicable, please let me know and I will review the course to determine if it can count as an approved gender course. 5. COMMENCEMENT COMMENCEMENT: Dates and Deadlines April 6 and 7, 2010 - Countdown to Commencement
If you have not done so, please remember to declare your intent to graduate (using the links on your "My UW" Portal). To have your name included in the commencement program, this must be done by April 9, 2010 for spring commencement and by November 13, 2009 for winter commencement. For additional information on commencement/graduation, please refer to the commencement website at:
http://www.secfac.wisc.edu/commence/GeneralInformation.htm 6. ADVISING INFORMATION As you can imagine, the registration and enrollment period for the spring 2010 semester will be different from semesters past as I will be on maternity leave. While I am on maternity leave from October through the end of the semester, there will not be regular advising available in Gender and Women’s Studies. Please utilize the tools available to you to assist in your registration process. I really encourage you all to be proactive as you approach the spring 2010 registration and enrollment period. Walk-in advising hours for the Spring 2010 semester will resume during the spring semester and will be determined by the first week of classes. I will email out my walk-in advising hours as soon as possible, as well as post them on our website and in the Gender and Women’s Studies office. 7. SELF-ADVISING TOOLS DARS: is a very helpful tool that is available to all students to manage their own student course requirements. For more information on requesting your DARS through your Student Center: http://www.lssaa.wisc.edu/dars/ • DARS reports can show you how the courses that you have enrolled in are meeting your graduation and major requirements. • How do I know if I can graduate? http://www.lssaa.wisc.edu/70bascom/academic_policy/Graduation_000.htm • How do I declare my intent to graduate? http://registrar.wisc.edu/students/graduation/apply_to_grad.php o If you have already declared your intent to graduate at the end of the spring semester, DARS will note this at the top of your report. Schedule of Classes can now be found in a variety of formats at: http://registrar.wisc.edu/course_source.php ***Please note the web timetable will NOT be published for the spring 2010 semester. Course Guide: is a new tool to assist students in selecting future courses. This is very helpful during registration and enrollment time. The Course Guide can also be found in your ‘Academics’ tab in MyUW. Department of Gender and Women’s Studies website: Here I will post a guide to registration and enrollment for our GWS and LGBT Studies students. Please use this as a reference, but do cross-check your DARS to confirm how courses are meeting your graduation requirements. If you have an advising emergency, that cannot addressed through any of the tools above… • For graduation requirements, including general education and BREADTH requirements, check in with the College of Letters & Science Advising Service at 262-5858. • For clarification on the GWS course offerings or enrollment issues, please call 263-4704 or email Christina Ewig, Associate Chair, at cewig@wisc.edu.
