Mary Washburn Willets Award for
Excellence in the Social Sciences
For a number of years, the Women's Studies Program has administered the Mary Washburn Willets Award for Excellence in the Social Studies. If faculty wish to nominate University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate students who meet the criteria listed below, please write a brief letter of nomination and also enclose a CV and copy of the student's relevant written work (e.g. class papers, research or dissertation proposals.) and send to the address below.
The Mary Washburn Willets Award for Excellence in the Social Sciences (Mary Washburn Willets (1629-1713) was a prominent Quaker Minister in Long Island. She gave public testimony, held meetings in her house and remained faithful to her beliefs despite public and private persecution.
Deadline: The deadline for nominations will be April 15.
Eligibility: 1) Ph.D. students who have been admitted to candidacy and who have completed an Option A or B minor in Women's Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
2) Dissertation topic to be relevant to women and in some area of the social sciences (e.g. psychology, economics, history, geography, sociology, etc.).
Selection: Selection to be made on the basis of excellence in academic work as evident in classwork, papers, etc. (This is not intended as a teaching award.). Selections will be made by an ad hoc committee of
the Women's Studies Program.
Award: $1000. There is no restriction on how the award is spent, although it is hoped that the recipient will use the award for some aspect of the Ph.D. research

The Hyde Dissertation Research Award for
Graduate Students
The Women's Studies Research Center, with the generosity of Professor Janet S. Hyde, offers a competitive award to support social science dissertation research on women/women's studies related work. Faculty members may nominate a University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate student who meets the criteria listed below. Graduate students may nominate themselves and have two letters of support sent to the Women's Studies Research Center.
Deadline: April 15.
Eligibility: 1) Ph.D. students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who have been admitted to candidacy. A Women's Studies Ph.D. minor is not necessary but encouraged.
2) Dissertation topic relevant to women and in an area of social science (e.g., psychology, economics, history, geography, sociology, political science)Application: Please include in the application package and send to the Women's Studies Research Center: 1) Student's CV; 2) Dissertation proposal (between 6-8 pages only in 12 point font); 3) Transcript; 4) One page budget and justification; 5) Two faculty letters of support; 6) Letter of (self-) nomination (if nominated by faculty, this can count as one of the two faculty letters of support)
Selection: Selection to be made on the basis of excellence in academic work as evident in transcript, papers etc.
Selections will be made by an ad hoc committee.
Award: Maximum award is $1,000 to be used for some aspect of Ph.D research.
The Hyde Dissertation Research Award is named after Janet Hyde, who is a Professor of Psychology and Women's Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Professor Hyde has made this award possible through royalties from her book Half the Human Experience: The Psychology of Women.
